How does LED light therapy work?

Light influences the body in a number of ways, from the simple production of vitamin D to the encouragement of cell growth. Within our skin, we have many different receptors that when stimulated have an immediate effect on our body. Some receptors respond to touch whilst others respond to various colors of light. Specific wavelengths of light stimulate different reactions in the skin and it is this that formulates the basis for light therapy. When the body becomes out of balance (due to age, health, environment, lifestyle etc) the frequency vibration within the cells is affected and this can lead to signs of ageing, skin conditions, illness and disease.

Skin cells have the ability to absorb light and use it as a source of energy to fuel the repair and rejuvenation of damaged cells or kill bacteria. It is a natural biochemical reaction similar to that of plant photosynthesis.

The increased energy enhances cellular metabolism, which in turn, stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, boosts circulation, and accelerates tissue repair. Studies have shown that when skin is exposed to LED light, skin cells regenerate themselves on average 150% to 200% faster, and hydration can be increased by up to 600%. This whole process results in radiant, youthful, and naturally healthy skin.

Does light therapy produce the same light as sunlight?

LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible light. Sunlight is made up of a whole spectrum of visible and invisible wavelengths that we see as white light  (day light). Light therapy uses only safe wavelengths that are proven to have therapeutic effects in the skin and does not contain UV wavelengths.

What skin conditions can be treated with LED light therapy?

Light therapy is clinically proven for the treatment of a wide range of skin conditions and the most common skin concerns, including lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, pigmentation, sun damage, dehydration, open and enlarged pores, dark circles and puffy eyes, oily and congested skin, acne, scars, wounds, burns, rosacea, and muscular and joint pain, just to name but a few.

How is the treatment carried out?

In preparation for a light therapy treatment, all make-up and skin care products (including sunscreen) must be removed to allow penetration of beneficial light into the skin. As the light is very bright, we recommend the use of protective eye goggles for comfort purposes. With red light, goggles may be removed to treat the under-eye area; however, with infrared light, client goggles must be worn for the entire duration of the treatment.

How does the treatment feel?

LED light therapy is a non-invasive and pain-free treatment that promotes a feeling of relaxation and well-being whilst rejuvenating the skin. Exposure to the light can increase serotonin levels, which in turn helps to relieve stress, tension, and headaches. Any feeling of ‘heat’ is most often due to the stimulation of blood circulation.

Are there any side effects?

No. There is no risk of irritation, side effects, or down time that may be associated with more invasive procedures. There have been no reported side effects in over 1,700 clinical studies, and it does not harm the body in any way.

How long does each treatment take?

A stand-alone LED light therapy treatment will take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Is LED light therapy safe?

LED light therapy is a heat-free treatment that does not contain harmful UV wavelengths, and therefore, cannot damage skin tissue or create photo sensitivity. It is clinically proven to be safe for all skin types, including darker skins and the most sensitive skin conditions.

Treatable Conditions – Amazing results!

LED Light therapy is effective for skin rejuvenation; fine lines and wrinkles; sun damage; acne and problem skin; sensitive and inflammatory conditions such as rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis; and post-treatment healing and scars. With LED therapy, there are some immediate visible changes in the skin, but most changes occur naturally over a few weeks. The light stimulates natural processes even after the treatment has stopped. LED is a progressive rather than an aggressive approach, and builds resistance over time to aging and external factors.

How many treatments are required?

An LED light treatment simply involves exposing the client’s skin to the beneficial light for 15 to 20 minutes. The number of treatments required can vary with skin type and condition. A single session is an ideal ‘pick me up’; however, a course of treatment is recommended for longer term results. As LED light therapy will not damage the skin, there is no limit to the amount of treatments that can be taken, and is an ideal all year round treatment.
